Tythe and Giving Back

We proudly support local initiatives through a modern interpretation of the Tythe system, donating a portion of our proceeds to community projects and environmental conservation efforts. We continue to aim to be a force for good, donating 1% of our turnover to charities that are involved in climate change and regenerative leadership.

Regenerative Tourism

We encourage responsible tourism that enriches both visitors and locals. By promoting eco-friendly travel, supporting local artisans, and fostering sustainable business practices, we aim to preserve the beauty of the Lake District for future generations.

Worms

In 2024 we installed our first worm farm! Managing director of The Urban Worm has this to say about the benefits of worm farming:

"Vermiculture has the potential to provide significant solutions for onsite organic waste management, whilst producing a high value organic fertiliser and compost as a byproduct. The Tiger worm (Eisenia Fetida) can consume upto half its bodyweight a day, and reduces the volume by up to 90%. Vermicompost, otherwise known as worm castings, or worm manure contains all 14 nutrients esssential for healthy plant growth and disease suppression, and is teeming with beneficial microorganisms."

Kelsick Grammar in Ambleside

Building

The restoration of Kelsick was driven by a strong focus on sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient solutions and reclaimed materials wherever possible. The interiors honour the building’s heritage while embracing modern, eco-conscious design. Key features include sheep’s wool insulation, a green roof, and solar panels. The building also benefits from solar gain through expansive glass doors and walls. Attenuation tanks in the car park help to reduce the risk of flooding and fell water is used for flushing toilets.

Charity

We collaborate with local charities and social enterprises to drive positive change within our community. Throughout the cafe we have our homegrown spider plants for sale, with all proceeds going to St. Mary's Hospice.

Wool

We take pride in using locally sourced wool and sustainable fabrics in our furnishings, reinforcing our dedication to ethical and eco friendly practices. Additionally, we produce and sell our own unique wool from our heritage flock, offering you the opportunity to support both sustainable farming and local craftsmanship.
