History
The story of Kelsick Grammar School begins in 1906, when it was built using funds from the Kelsick Educational Foundation. This foundation, established through the will of John Kelsick, who passed away in 1723 at the age of 24, aimed to support the education and development of young people in the local community.
Operating as a co-educational grammar school from 1907 to 1965, Kelsick required students to pass an entrance exam due to increasing educational costs. However, with the rise of comprehensive education in the 1960s, the grammar school was no longer needed. In 1966, Charlotte Mason College acquired the building, expanding its teacher training campus. Among its students was a young David Williams, who would later become the driving force behind the building's restoration.
When Charlotte Mason College became part of the University of Cumbria, the Kelsick building was eventually sold to developers in 2012. By 2017, after years of neglect, the once-proud structure was in severe disrepair. Recognising its potential, David Williams — the Founder and CEO of Impact, a global experiential development organisation — purchased the site, saving it from demolition.
After years of careful restoration, Kelsick now stands as a symbol of heritage and innovation. It serves as Impact’s global headquarters while also offering coworking and meeting spaces for freelancers, organisations, and community groups. In June 2023, Force Café opened its doors, providing much-needed refreshments for walkers and explorers heading to Stock Ghyll Waterfalls, Wansfell, and beyond. More than just a building, Kelsick is a living testament to education, resilience, and community spirit.
